Since my Harrier cockpit is a long way from being even remotely “flyable”, I have decided to build a custom “button box” that will attach to my Warthog Thrustmaster throttle that will give me instant access to all the most important switches and buttons on the Harrier, for which I can’t currently map to any of my existing controllers.
Since I fly in VR, it’s important to lay things out in a way that I can feel for the control I need and know that I am pressing / toggling the correct switch.
I plan to have functions for:
- ODU buttons (5x)
- Master Arm switch
- Parking brake switch
- Master Caution reset
- AFC on/off/reset
- Anti-skid switch
- H20 (maybe)
- Exterior light switch (3-position)
- Engine Start (maybe)
- Load CAS data (shift-alt-8)
- Rearm/refuel menu
- Repair
- Landing gear switch
- More???
As an added bonus, the square momentary push buttons I bought light up, so I can control those lights with DCS-BIOS. For example, I will have the master caution light up, and the HUD mode lights will light up to show which one is selected.
I am still working on the CAD model for this, trying to finalize dimensions and where the controls will go. I have modeled the parts I am using so I can accurately plan their positions relative to each other.
Here is a work in progress screenshot:
